Head Start is a comprehensive child development program for low-income families designed to meet the needs of children age 3 to 5. Components emphasized are education, health (medical, dental, nutrition, and mental health), and social services. Parent involvement is an essential part of program planning.

Head Start represents an organized method of assisting families to assess their needs. Special needs children receive a full range of Head Start developmental services.

SAISD Head Start operates three Head Start centers for a full day and follows the SAISD school calendar. Rio Vista and Day centers also operate Early Head Start centers for a full day/full year program.
